Heroes Behind the Wheel.

Sometimes it’s good to bring out the oldies. The King has some good songs, but “Suspicious Minds” is my fave Elvis tune… “We’re caught in a trap. I can’t walk out, because I love you too much baby. Why can’t you see what you’re doing to me, when you don’t believe a word I say? We can’t go on together with suspicious minds. And we can’t build our dreams on suspicious minds….”

I know how some people can be with films. If you have been waiting a really long time for a film to come out, you’ll possibly go and see it opening weekend or even opening night. You may possibly even sit right at the front centre, leaning in with your eyes wide open so that the rays of light from the cinema screen hit your eyes first before anyone else in the auditorium. With me, it’s all about convenience over timing. Here’s the deal: the bid-budget Chinese movie Hero came out a few months ago on DVD. I’d been waiting for this film for months, ever since the first time I heard of it and who was involved in it. As time went by I got tired of waiting for it to be released so lost interest. I forgot about it and it was only recently that I remembered it whilst browsing, so I bought it but not with too much excitement. It sat around on my shelf for a good few weeks because I refused to watch it unless I was excited about it. It took a while but I worked up my appetite and rediscovered my excitement for it and finally got around to watching it this weekend gone by.

The wait was worth-it. In recent memory I can’t name an even more awesome film in terms of cinematography and design. As each scene unfolded I couldn’t get over how beautifully shot the film was and how much attention there was to detail and colour. Simply beautiful and as my mum said, “A movie worth watching again and again.”

On Sunday I spent the day with Yogi, Sanjee and S. Went to see 2 Fast 2 Furious and spent pretty much the whole day discussing cars and racing. The best way to learn more about something is to immerse yourself in it; be around people who are knowledgable about that something. When it comes to racing and cars, Yogi is fairly clued up, so I ended up learning a lot about performance cars and racing. I was never really interested in cars and racing before I got my own car but now it’s got to the point where Yogi’s managed to brainwash me into choosing a performance car over a luxury car. I’ve always liked plush cars made by Mercedes et al, but in recent months I’ve been more excited by performance cars a la Suburu and Mitsubishi. It seems that the laws of fashion apply to the automobile industry too: that a lot of the cost seems to go into the brand name. Mercedes and BMW unarguably make really nice looking cars but at the end of the day, they’re not overly powerful. Mitsubishi and other “lesser” manufacturers make really nice looking performance cars, but for the same price as that of bigger names, will give you more ooomph for your pound, dollar, gallon, etc. For me now, performance and comfort is everything (besides the reliability of completing A to B journeys).

The other day whilst I was out driving, I saw a new model Subaru Impreza waiting to turn onto the main road. As I approached, I was expecting to see some sort of gangster-wannabe driving it, but was surprised when instead it was someone who looked like a typical office worker (shirt and tie). When people go out shopping for an expensive car, a lot of them will want something discreet such as a car without a spoiler or grills on the bonnet. I don’t care if I would look slightly out of place in a car whilst wearing a suit, shirt and tie. I’d go for something that would have enough power to guarantee I get into work on time. ^_^

Everytime we meet up, the other thing we tend to discuss at length are incidents and escapades from previous holidays. The stories and catchphrases coined never lose their appeal and I still laugh about them to this day. Next time we plan something big, we’re going to try to get everyone to go. With everyone being busier with work, research and studies, it’s going to be difficult. I’m not sure where we’ll be going, but the next big one will probably be some time next year. We were considering India, but now it’s provisionally the Chinese mainland and maybe Hong Kong. Hopefully we’ll be able to slot in a small trip before the year is up. It seems Yogi wants a holiday where we can hire out cars and drive around. That boy sure loves to drive. ^_^

I also managed to finally see the photographs from Yogi’s camera from our USA trip last year. The one that stood out the most was one that was photoshopped and placed discreetly between the other photos:
